FAIRY TALE INTERIOR - DESIGNER TAMARA KOPALIANI

The apartment belongs to my husband’s brother, the philosopher Levan Gigineishvili, and I was entrusted with its design. Levan placed significant trust in both my husband and me, allowing us to make the final decisions. Even if there were disagreements, I always managed to get my way.

The prime attraction of the apartment is its stunning square-shaped living room, adorned with unique wall art that likely dates back to the 1950s. It is said that during that era, artists from the Hermitage visited Tbilisi to decorate the walls and ceilings of select apartments.

When we acquired the apartment, it was in a dire state, but we were committed to preserving everything as much as possible. From the start of the renovation, our aim was to enhance the space so that its hidden gems gradually became apparent. We focused on meticulous attention to detail, revitalizing them while integrating modern functionalities. The apartment seemed to guide us in what it needed, and we adhered to these cues.

We maintained the original room layout and partitions, with the exception of an extension on the yard side, which we transformed into a sun porch. This addition has seamlessly blended with the apartment’s overall aesthetic. Interestingly, the sun porch has led some tourists to mistake our home for a café, resulting in several amusing encounters when they approached to enjoy a coffee.
